Frequently asked questions
How do I set up Kids Phone?
Install it on your kid's iPhone. Onboarding runs on that phone: enter your kid's first name and birthday, pick a username, choose how many minutes a chapter is worth, set a 4-digit parent passcode and a security question, then tap Enable and follow Apple's Screen Time prompts (Continue, then Allow with Passcode). Pick the apps to lock and you're done.
Where are the parent settings?
Tap the gear on the home screen, then enter your passcode and the answer to your security question.
I forgot the parent passcode.
The passcode and security answer are stored only on the phone as salted hashes, so we cannot look them up or reset them. If you remember neither, delete the app and set it up again. Your kid's username can be reclaimed with "Already have an account?" if you know the passcode; otherwise choose a new one.
How does my kid earn minutes?
Home → Read → pick a book → read a chapter → "I finished" → retell it out loud. Writing and Math work the same way from the home screen. Calls with approved friends earn one minute of screen time per minute on the call.
Why does the Friends screen ask for microphone, camera and local network?
Calls need the microphone and camera. Local network lets two phones in the same house connect directly for clearer sound. You can answer the iOS prompts however you like; if you decline, calls simply won't work until you turn them on in Settings → Kids Phone.
How do I add a friend?
Friends → Add a friend → type the friend's username and their secret word → "Ask a grown-up" → approve with your parent passcode. Both kids' phones need to be signed in to iCloud.
How do I block someone?
Long-press the friend on the Friends screen → "Remove friend". All calls and texts from that user stop immediately.
The apps aren't locking.
Open Parent Settings and check that Screen Time access is enabled. If iOS asked "Allow Access to Screen Time" and it was declined, go to Settings → Screen Time and remove then re-add Kids Phone, or reinstall the app.
Can I move to a new phone?
Yes. On the first onboarding screen tap "Already have an account?" and enter the username and parent passcode.
Is there a subscription?
No. Kids Phone is free with no in-app purchases, no ads and no analytics.
How do I delete my kid's account and data?
Parent Settings → "Delete this account". This erases the account, friend links and everything stored for it, and returns the app to onboarding. You can also email us and we will delete server-side data for a username within 7 days.
